This book is a collection of articles that address the lives and experiences of Delawareans during the mid-nineteenth century in general and the Civil War years in particular. It examines the subject matter from three perspectives, political, military and social, that combined provide and understanding of the issues and circumstances that influenced the people of Delaware and their leaders during this traumatic period. Included are biographical sketches of those who served as members of the military during the war, such as Maj. Gen. Albert T.A. Torbert, Admiral Samuel Francis DuPont, Commodore John P. Gillis, and Maj. Gen. James Harrison Wilson. Also featured are diarist Anna M. Ferris of Wilmington, Newark Presbyterian minister James Vallandingham journalist/writer George Alfred "Gath" Townsend who in his youth resided on Market Street in Georgetown, and Patty Cannon, the infamous kidnapper of African-Americans, who operated on both sides of the Delaware/Maryland border just west of Seaford.
