This non-fiction book is a recounting of a 31-month whaling voyage aboard the whaleship Lucy Ann (1841-1844). The voyage of the Wilmington whaleship Lucy Ann was, like hundreds of others, a long and exhausting undertaking, during which all hands faced perilous encounters, dashed hopes, shipboard pranks, grinding boredom, good fellowship, bad food, faraway ports, and moments of breathless excitement. All of that was vividly depicted as it happened by John F. Martin, a Lucy Ann whaleman with a jocular approach to life and an enormous talent for writing and painting.
